Lauren Fensterstock is an American artist, among other things, that lives in Maine. I chose to research her because I liked the way she incorporated crystals and gems into her artworks. She has worked with a variety of other materials as well, but the exhibit that caught my eye is Some Lands Are Made of Light, her solo exhibition at the Claire Oliver Gallery in Harlem.

About half of this exhibition is made of ink and crystals on paper.

My favorite piece is one of her non-paper works. The Intimate Vast caught my eye because it looked, at first glance, like a snake. Even though it's not a depiction of a snake, I still think it resembles one: the angle of the photograph in the online exhibit frames the lotus petals almost like a tail, and the tendrils coming off the lotus appear distinctly snake-like. I think the lotus shape combined with the shape of a round mandala offering pan the sculpture was modeled after are more apparent after several looks, rather than the quick glance I gave it while looking over the gallery. This confusion was a big part of pulling my attention to The Infinite Vast. Another thing I like about this piece is the lack of color. Rather than drawing attention with a bright burst of color, I think the contrast of it works to catch your eye. The stark white background helps this effect, as do the crystals/glass of the sculpture itself.
