WHAT IS A FASHION DESIGNER?
I chose to research fashion designers for this post. While fashion designers may not put paint on canvas, they do use artistic skills to create unique, beautiful clothing and designs, which can often even involve sketches and drawn concepts. It's actually a really interesting career, and has a lot more depth than some may expect! While this topic is closely linked to my last career post on stylists, they are different. Stylists focus on styling someone's appearance, including hair, makeup, etc., where as fashion designers focus on the actual designs on the clothes, accessories, etc. worn on the person being styled. Similar, but not the same! I wanted to continue off of the same train of thought for this one, which is why I chose something so similar.
WHAT DO FASHION DESIGNERS DO?
Fashion designers are responsible for designing clothing, accessories, and footwear which people wear every day. These designs may go into a store, like Macy's or Aerie, or they may even be featured on the runway! Fashion designers can work in wholesale or manufacturing establishments, apparel companies, retailers, theater or dance companies, and design firms. Sometimes, they can even work independently if they have the resources and notability. Most fashion designers work in New York and California, which is why we may associate "high fashion" or being more fashionable in general with those areas.
WHAT CAN A FASHION DESIGNER IN?
Generally a degree is needed to help get a job or foothold in any sort of fashion-design-related position. The below degrees can be helpful when doing so!
Associate Degree in:
Fashion design
Textile design
Fashion merchandising
Fashion marketing and management
Bachelor's Degree in the above, as well.
